Michael M. Sinclair, PhD, MSSW

       Michael is a native New Yorker who recently relocated to Charm City, Baltimore, MD. He has earned a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology from State University of New York, College at Old Westbury, a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University, and completed his doctoral Social Work course work at Norfolk State University Michael was awarded the Paige E. Cook scholar at Columbia University for outstanding contributions to the profession of Social Work. Michael brings over 20 years experience in the field of Social Work and his colleagues describe him as having a passion for helping people. Michael has held a number of interesting professional social work positions in a variety of different fields of practice. 

 

       Prior to joining the faculty at Morgan State University School of Social Work,  Michael worked as a Clinical Social Worker in Virginia’s Department of Correction and a school social worker. As the past director of Rutgers University’s, Project SEARCH, Michael has worked to coordinate the aftercare services of ex-offender youth.  Additionally, he has also been the New Jersey state coordinator for Social Work p.r.n. and an administrator of a school/community based program for Grand Street Settlement.  Michael has done extensive research in the area of Youth Development and has several written articles relative to Juvenile Delinquency and Gangs.

 

       Michael currently has a private practice with children and family in the Baltimore, MD area.  Michael is involved in many civic and community organizations such as the:

        Those who know him will attest that Michael is a dynamic force in the profession of social work, a catalyst of positive change for youth that have made mistakes, and a leader within his community. Michael has adopted the phrase spoken by Fredrick Douglass “ It is far easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”as his motto and creed.

 

         Michael has been teaching for over 15 years. He has taught both on the graduate level and the undergraduate level. Michael has taught across the Social Work curriculum which includes practice courses (Individual, Family and Group Dynamic), Policy, Child Welfare, Research, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Field seminars and Urban Youth and Pop Culture Courses. Although, Michael’s considers his area of expertise as Child Welfare.

 

         Michael has done a considerable amount of research around Vicarious Trauma and Traumatology relative to the Child Welfare Systems.  His research has been published and has gained him notoriety with nationally syndicated television programs like the Queen Latifah Show, and Nightline. More importantly Michael’s research has led to some significant paradigm shifts in the way public child welfare work is done. More emphasis has been placed on supporting the caregivers and workers which he suspects will in turn lead to a dramatic decrease in turnover rates among child welfare workers
